Lucid Dream Movie Reviews - Waking Life
Waking Life is an amazing movie. Directed by Richard Linklater, this movie delves into existentialism, the nature of consciousness, and Lucid Dreaming through a series of loosely connected scenes of different characters, tied together by the appearance of a young in most of the material - the entire movie can be viewed as him going through an existential crises and/or dreaming and having false awakenings and lucid moments.
The film employed the technique of rotoscoping - shooting all of the scenes with real video cameras, and then having artists paint over the original video frames. The effect is realistic and cartoonish at the same time. To add to the bizarreness, each transitory part of the movie is re-worked by different artists, creating various styles on top of what is already an incredible effect. This approach of manipulating real video by animating over it was later used by the director in his film A Scanner Darkly. Although the entire movie is filled with cool graphic art and interesting conversations and rants, there is a scene that explicitly discusses Lucid Dreaming and makes this film a must for lucid dream enthusiasts. All relevant material, the dream characters in the lucid dream scene discuss induction and reality checking, the limits of the dream world, and things to do while lucid. Watching Waking Life will have you really wondering if you are awake, and how much of your life you may have been sleeping through. |
