The Cell is about a child psychologist - played by Jennifer Lopez - who works for a company that has a technology which allows her to enter the dreams of others. This dream-sharing is made possible by some undefined electronic means, coupled with some chemical intervention. When a serial killer who has become comatose is taken into custody, J. Lo and a detective - played by Vince Vaughn - have to enter the psychopath's mind to find where he is hiding a victim before she dies.
With very cool effects, The Cell makes for an entertaining - if implausible - journey into the depths of a killer's mind. While dream-sharing is impossible today, with the right advancements the prospects put forth in this movie are less ridiculous. One important point made apparent in The Cell is that it is difficult to get your bearings in dreams, and given a fraction of an opportunity the dream-system (yours, not some killer's) will overpower your normal thought processes, with some training and enough will, however, it is possible to recognize that "you" are the creator of the dream world and have ultimate say in what can transpire therein. There is a line from the movie where a client of J. Lo's character says "Mocky Loc is the Bogey-Man, Mocky Loc wants me where I am." Although it si mentioned that this comes from a Mother Goose fairy tale, I have never been able to find the real origin (if any, outside of this film). If you have any knowledge on where this line comes from, please send me a message. |
