Implied Consent to Participate in Research
Data collected from this confidential survey will be used for completion of a master’s degree in Developmental Psychology at San Francisco State University. The information gathered will be used for research on typical dream content. The survey questions will be about your dreams (while sleeping, not “dreams” as in aspirations and wishes). You have been invited to participate because you are an English-speaking student in the SFSU Psychology Department or have been invited to participate through other channels. You must be 18 years of age or older to participate. There is a risk that you might feel some discomfort in answering these questions, but you may stop participating at any time or you may refuse to answer any question (If the survey requires you to respond to a particular question which you do not want to answer, type "Skip" in the text field). You may choose to participate or not. You may answer only the questions you feel comfortable answering. If you do not wish to participate, you may simply exit the online survey, with no penalty to yourself. If you do participate, completion and return of the survey indicates your consent to the above conditions. If you are using your participation in this survey as a means to earn extra-credit in a class, print out the final confirmation page or contact Derek Levine at diggy@sfsu.edu and request a confirmation to be e-mailed to you. Then present this confirmation to your professor. Please do not put your name on this form. The survey should take approximately 20-30 minutes to complete. The survey consists of four pages. Please complete the entire survey until you reach the completion page. Any questions or concerns should be directed to the principal investigator, Derek Levine, at diggy@sfsu.edu, or the research adviser, Professor Spencer, at tspencer@sfsu.edu. Which of the following responses best matches how you feel about this ability? I do not believe this is possible. I think this is possible but extremely rare. I believe that other people can do this but I never have. I have done this once or a few times, and I believe that is about how often other people experience this. I can occasionally do this, but I do not think that many other people can do this. I think that this is fairly common. Most Important Dream Describe in detail the dream you recall any time from your life-span which you consider the personally most important dream you have ever had, for whatever reason (you do not have to state why this dream was important to you, but you may include this also after reporting the actual dream, in the same text-field). Earliest Remembered Dream Describe the first dream that you can remember ever having, in as much detail as you can recall. Use initials for names and do not include any personal information which you do not feel comfortable describing. Notes About This Survey:
The questions included in the Dream Survey for this study were grouped into several pages - such as Typical Dreams choices and full dream report descriptions - and randomization of material was manipulated to minimize order-effects in participants' responses. Pages were randomized and in pull-down menus all choices were randomized. The intention behind this study and the subsequent iterations of the online questionnaire was/is to collect rich information - both specific and broad - about a person's dream-life in as short a time as possible. Multiple-choice and essay-style questions and answers are included because each approach different angles of understanding dreaming. If you are looking for ideas on what types of studies to run and you are interested in dreaming, you may be able to use The Dream Survey and give links to your participants - I would be happy to provide this in exchange for your study results. |
